Submitting Photographs

My portraits are based on the photographs that you provide so good quality, clear images are essential to making sure that I can capture your pet’s likeness accurately. The more details that appear in your photographs, the finer the details I can work into my illustration. Provide as many photos as you can; I usually ask for around 5 images although I do understand this isn’t always possible if the portrait is for a present or to commemorate the loss of a beloved pet.

Please feel free to contact me, I am more than happy to look at any images you may have and we can hopefully work from there.

Here’s a quick ‘how to guide’ for taking the best photos for a portrait:

  • It’s best to take photos of your pet from their eye level as other angles can look distorted.
  • High resolution photos are preferable, this means that when zoomed in on the image isn’t blurry and finer details like hair, texture and colour can be clearly seen.
  • A photo taken in natural light either outside or in a well lit room will show the colours of your pet’s coat better. Don’t use a flash or filters as these can blur important details.
  • Photographs showing bright, clear eyes help to bring an illustration to life. Eyes are an important feature to capture even if they are only partially seen through long hair.
  • Be careful not to crop any important details such as the tips of ears or paws!
  • Think about whether you want a portrait of your pet looking at the camera, a side on profile, sitting up or lying down.
  • If you’d like a group portrait of your pets, it might be easier to take individual photos of each animal which I can put together in the planning process.
  • Don’t worry too much about the background; I don’t tend to include much of a background image unless specifically requested.

Hopefully you will find this helpful but don’t hesitate to ask any questions and I will be happy to offer advice
